Tatura police Sergeant Ian Fulton said he spotted the black Mercedes and silver Toyota driving east on the Midland Hwy between Dhurringile Rd and Craven Rd at 11.30pm on Monday, June 15.
Sgt Fulton said the two vehicles were driving next to each other and it appeared they were drag racing in a section of road that included overtaking lanes.
He alleged they had driven at more than an estimated 180km/h on the Midland Hwy.
Sgt Fulton followed the two cars to Mooroopna where he alleges they reached speeds he estimated to be 135km/h in the 50km/h zone.
The two cars were stopped by police just before the causeway to Shepparton.
The Toyota was being driven by a 17-year-old boy on a NSW P-plate licence, which he had held for six months.
The Mercedes was being driven by a 18-year-old Shepparton man, who had only had his probationary driver’s licence for five months.
He also had three passengers in the car, despite his P1 licence restricting the number of passengers to one.
Both drivers will be charged on summons with speeding dangerously, driving in a dangerous manner and exceeding the speed limit by 45km/h or more.
The 18-year-old will appear before Shepparton Magistrates’ Court on the charges, while the 17-year-old will appear before a Children’s Court.
Both cars, which both drivers said belonged to their fathers, were impounded for 30 days at a cost of $1200 each.
