In 2023, eligibility for courses in the Free TAFE program increased, allowing 1638 students to enrol at GOTAFE without age, upskilling, or reskilling requirements.
This year, these eligibility changes have been retained and further expanded upon.
Students who identify as Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander can now access free tuition, regardless of whether they are new or continuing students.
Moreover, the Free TAFE courses delivered at GOTAFE have been extended to include Certificate III in Hospitality (SIT30622) and Certificate III in Commercial Cookery (SIT30821).
Luke Surace, GOTAFE’s acting executive director of education, emphasised the timely importance of introducing these new courses.
According to Mr Surace, there is a growing demand for workers with vocational qualifications.
“The Victorian Skills Plan predicts that one-third of jobs in 2026 will require skills aligned to VET qualifications,” he said.
“Free TAFE supports training in those areas of high demand and those facing shortages.”
One student who has benefited from these advantages is Alistair Wall, a Certificate III in Information Technology (ICT30120) student at GOTAFE.
Mr Wall said the Free TAFE scheme enabled him to dedicate more time and energy to his studies.
“Because of Free TAFE, I was able to put extra time and commitment into the course without any financial stress,” he said.
“I want to continue my studies and complete a Certificate IV in Cyber Security (number 4 VIC).”
The training scheme is delivered with Victorian and Commonwealth Government funding to eligible individuals.
