The company is offering eight scholarships to support a Pre-Apprenticeship TAFE Certificate II in Electrotechnology in three locations across Victoria, including Yorta Yorta Country (Shepparton), Dja Dja Wurrung Country (Bendigo), and Wurundjeri Country (Burnley).
The scholarship, valued at up to $2000, will be awarded to eight First Nations people who demonstrate a commitment to building a career in the electrical industry.
It can be used for costs such as school fees, tools, clothing, rent, childcare, or to supplement an income while attending the course.
Tegan Miller, CitiPower and Powercor’s First Peoples engagement lead, said the pre-apprenticeship scholarship program was the first of its kind in Victoria.
“This is all about supporting First Peoples to enter the electrical trade industry and breaking down barriers,” she said.
“We want to support a more inclusive and diverse workforce, with employees who bring different ideas, backgrounds and perspectives that better reflect the communities we serve.”
CitiPower and Powercor technical training manager Neil Roberts said the program followed the success of a similar pre-apprenticeship scholarship for women that had led to many permanent roles within the business.
“Our annual apprenticeship program is incredibly sought-after, and our pre-apprenticeship programs, like this one, are a fantastic way for candidates to get an understanding of the many opportunities a career with CitiPower and Powercor can offer,” he said.
For those successful in the program, there is no obligation to apply for a role with the company.
However, when applications open, candidates can be put on the candidate list for the company’s apprenticeship program.
The four-year apprenticeship program offers a nationally recognised electrical trade qualification and benefits such as a nine-day fortnight.
The company will also provide scholarship recipients with additional training at their depots and guidance to working in the electrical industry.
