The Roos were determined to bring the intensity shown against Yarrawonga a fortnight ago, while the Rovers were keen to get back on the winners list to consolidate their spot in the top five.
Changes to the Roos line-up were the addition of Ryan Eyers who was free of Murray Bushranger commitments, veteran Kade Kuschert who returned after a number of seconds games, and Damien Wilson who was unavailable last game.
Unfortunately, the Roos went in without Darcy Melksham who suffered a bad dose of the flu, speedster Cody Howard and small forward Charlie Nastasi who was unavailable this week.
The game began with the Wangaratta Rovers taking charge. They had two goals on the board before the Roos responded.
Lively forward Hayden Filliponi kicked two goals in a row to narrow the margin.
Joe Hansen and Jarred Lane were starting to win possessions through the midfield to even up the contest.
A forward 50 mark late in the quarter, and an after-siren goal, the Rovers took the lead at quarter time 4.4 to 2.2.
The second quarter played out similarly to the first quarter with the Rovers scoring two early goals. Jarred Lane stemmed the tide with a long Roo goal.
Tom Goodwin, resting up forward, was able to run onto a loose ball, but unfortunately his running shot hit the post.
The Roo backline had settled into the game with Jack Schilg and Cameron Barrett intercepting a number of Rovers forward moves and giving the Roo forwards scoring opportunities.
As the first quarter ended so did the second when a late Rovers free kick saw them score a goal after the siren.
At half time it was Corowa 4.3.27 to Rovers 6.6.42.
The third quarter was an arm wrestle with limited opportunities to score as both defences were on top and repelling attacks on a regular basis. Consequently, the Rovers scored the only goal of the quarter.
At three quarter time the Roo boys trailed by 22 points. The game was far from over with the Roos looking to launch an all-out attack on the contest by taking the game on and taking risks to get the ball forward.
The last quarter started with some telling possessions in the mid-field by Cameron Barrett and Cameron Wilson who were able to get the ball forward to small forward Hayden Filliponi who was able to finish off with two early goals to get the game back on the Roos terms.
The game continued to be tough in close but once the ball came out it moved quickly around the ground.
The Roos were within 10 points midway through the quarter, but the Rovers were not done yet as they managed a goal to give themselves some breathing space until Kaelan Bradtke replied with a long goal.
When the siren sounded the Rovers had taken a mark within range and another after-siren goal saw them run out 17-point winners
At the final siren it was the Roos 7.6.48 to the Rovers 9.11.65.

The Rovers won the highly contested game 15.16.106 to 4.4.28. Deakin Clancy was the stand-out forward with 3 goals. We welcomed back James Svarc who kicked the other goal.

Under 18s
The Roos had a lot to play for on Saturday against an in-form Wangaratta Rovers, a win would keep the Roo's finals hopes alive and the boys didn't disappoint with their intensity, lifting to the next level for a full four quarters.
Although the Rovers held a slight lead at every break, the Roos were never far away on the scoreboard and trailed by only four points at the last break.
Coach, George Sandral pleaded with his group to really lift in the last quarter and that's exactly what they did.
They got their noses in front at about the ten-minute mark and their defensive pressure on the opposition was going to be the difference in the end, with the Roo's coming away nine-point victors in a thrilling game of football.
Final score - Corowa Rutherglen 8.7.55 to Wangaratta Rovers 7.4.46
