NAGAMBIE
Wild weather once again smashed the Nagambie golf course, making patience and resilience two virtues needed for a good score. The rain from early in the week was of benefit and showed how well the Nagambie track drains.
The final par event for the season brought 34 players to the course, with the 'Golden Nugget' proving not everything has to be pretty to succeed; Aaron Winnell, who has been knocking on the door in recent weeks, got it done with +4. Well done 'Red Nut'.
Runner-up was Jeremy Ezard with +3 getting his game back on track with some big events just around the corner, and local junior Rhys Shepherd again finishing in the top three with it being only a matter of time before he breaks through for a victory.
The nearest-the-pins required some creative play; having to work the ball through tricky wind conditions, Jeremy Ezard claimed the third and 13th, then 'the bullet' Wayne LeCerf stepped up to the 16th and rifled one home.
This week's golf is a stroke gold medal play-off with the first silver medal also being contested to kick off a new season.
On office duty is S. Bryant and in the bar G. Whiteman.

Last week’s winner of the Twilight event came back to earth with seven points, but that’s golf.

I always thought school teachers would be quick learners; not so Les Walsh who hit his first ball into the lake on the sixth, then his second, followed by his third, all in the same direction, finally finishing with an eight. Lucky he can putt.
Mandy McGrath who also hit her ball into the lake but hers skimmed across the water and landed on dry land.
Les, you might need to have a chat to Mandy.
Marita Cornwall got the surprise of her life when she accidentally hit her ball into a tree on the 12th; it ricocheted up the tree — but to her surprise two balls came down! Hope she continued with the right ball.
This Saturday is the qualifying round of the men’s four-ball best-ball net stroke event with the top four qualifying to play for the summer four-ball knock out. The women will play a Stableford event.
All golfers need to be double vaccinated to play and enter the clubhouse.

The November monthly medal, sponsored by Drummond Golf and Newton’s Parcel Service, also the qualifying round of the Glad Robbins knockout, was played in wintry conditions, unusual for late spring.
A-grade and monthly medal was won by Colleen Johns, who scored five pars to give her a 70 nett. Runner-up was Niki Miller who has recently retired from a long nursing career, and is now finding time to sharpen her skills on the fairways. Niki parred five holes, which included the elusive 18th, to give her a 72 nett and a voucher to Char Grilled Chicken.
Rita Fairchild won B-grade and the Drummond voucher with 73 nett, which included a great shot for par on the 14th and nearest-to-the-pin. Runner-up was Lois Roger with 76 nett, also sponsored by Char Grilled Chicken.

GV VETERANS
The Goulburn Valley Veteran Golfers Committee has regretfully decided to cancel the last scheduled event for 2021 planned for Valley View Golf Club on November 29.
After an interrupted 2021 program the GVVGA committee has prepared a syllabus for 2022 that will commence at Parklands Golf Club on January 31, 2022 with a four-ball best-ball event and 8.30am assembly.
The annual general meeting will be held at the conclusion of play and all golfers are invited to consider nominating for a position on the committee. Nominations may be submitted on the day of the meeting, or you may contact the secretary up to two days prior by text or email. The committee is ageing and some long-serving members deserve a break.
Rich River has withdrawn from the roster but all of the other host clubs have committed to working in 2022.
The syllabus and membership cards for 2022 will be available for the normal $20 fee, so arrive early to allow a little extra time for registration.
The COVID-19 pandemic is still here, so all players in 2022 will need to be double vaxxed and abide by all COVIDsafe regulations that are relevant at that time.
Have a merry Christmas, and organisers look forward to renewing the friendships and competition in the new year.
MERRIGUM
A return to wintry weather meant a reduced field contested Merrigum’s par event on Saturday. Showers threatened throughout the day but fortunately for those on the course they didn’t eventuate. The wind however provided a challenge and this meant that nobody was able to equal par.
James Campbell was the winner with a round of -1, a very good effort for someone off his handicap in the prevailing conditions. At least with par, once you have run out of shots you can pick up and go to the next hole, something he would have liked to have done on his first twilight hole a couple of days earlier.
Greg Hall also scored -1 but had to settle for runner-up after the countback. Good to see Greg back after work has kept him busy for a few weeks.
Nearest-the-pins were won by Ash Sanders on the ninth, Phil Savage on the jackpot 12th and Simon Doherty on the 14th.
Just an update on last week’s summer fourball round and an eagle scored by Tommy Ladhams on the par five seventh hole, which almost passed unnoticed. It didn’t go unnoticed by his playing partner John Fuller though, whose head was almost taken off by Tom’s shanked third shot, which then ricocheted from a tree into the hole. As they say, you don’t have to draw pictures, but it resulted in a handy three nett two on the hole and meant Tom almost took Simon Doherty’s title of luckiest golfer in the club (LBGITC) — but not quite.
It was also lucky another player on Saturday lives close by — handy, when he picked out an odd pair of golf shoes from his Imelda Marcos-like shoe closet and had to return to get a matching pair.
Damien Sceney had a great win in Thursday’s twilight competition with a round of 55-17-38. He was half a shot ahead of runner-up Russell Dunn who scored 51-12.5-38.5. Russell also picked up the double jackpot for nearest-the-pin on the ninth, while James Campbell was closest on the 14th. Simon Doherty won least putts for the second week in a row, this week with 16. The two-point cut was 40.
This Saturday’s event is stroke for the Privilege Cup.
Three of the club’s golfers are taking on the Cancer Council’s longest day challenge, raising funds for that charity. It involves playing four rounds of golf on the one day, with Simon and Craig Doherty and James Campbell taking up the challenge on December 12. If you would like to support them for a good cause you can go to longestday.org.au/find-a-friend and search for their names.
