Premier to give evidence during Yoorrook hearings

The event included a Welcome to Country and smoking ceremony followed by remarks from Yoorrook commissioners and Gunditjmara Elders.

It precedes three weeks of hearings into injustice relating to land, sky and waters.

Witnesses will include Victorian Premier Jacinta Allan, government ministers, senior bureaucrats, organisations, associations and Traditional Owners.

The State Library of Victoria says the state’s first permanent European settlement was established at Portland Bay by Edward Henty on November 19 in 1834 after arriving from Tasmania.

Prior to the permanent settlement, whalers had used the area as a base since the early 1830s.
