Parliamentary inquiry launched into state’s climate readiness

Victoria’s Legislative Council Environment and Planning Committee is seeking submissions to its inquiry into climate resilience in Victoria.

The inquiry is seeking to understand and address the main risks posed to Victoria’s built environment and infrastructure by climate change.

The committee will explore the implications of these risks to Victorians and evaluate the preparedness of the Victorian Government to mitigate and adapt to these challenges.

“Climate change is an undeniable reality, and its impacts on our built environment and infrastructure require our urgent attention,” committee chair Ryan Batchelor said.

“This inquiry aims to provide a comprehensive understanding of the risks faced by Victoria and to assess the effectiveness of current measures in place.”

The inquiry will also look into the adequacy of the current Victorian planning system as it relates to climate change impacts and whether further inquiries or investigations are needed.

“As we have seen starkly over the past weeks, our resilience in dealing with storms and other devastating events needs to be considered,” Mr Batchelor said.

“We encourage contributions from the public, from experts and from businesses and groups affected by the risks posed by climate change, to contribute insights to inform our recommendations.”

The deadline for submissions to the inquiry is May 1.
