The Berrigan Conservation Group and Tidy Towns Committee of Management has approached Berrigan Shire Council with a request to have a mural installed on the raw water tower at 12 Cobram St, Berrigan.
As owner of the asset, council must approve any works at the site.
The council is also the relevant planning authority to provide development consent.
At council’s meeting last week, in-principal approval was granted subject to development of an agreed Memorandum of Understanding setting out the responsibilities of both parties.
This allows a development application to be lodged, with a formal decision of council to be made at a later date when more about the project and its costs is known.
In a report to council, deputy chief executive officer Matthew Hansen said the committee have several aims with this project.
“Firstly, they wish to include the work on the Silo Art Trail network.
“The committee believe the work would be a tourist attraction and bring visitors to the town.
“They believe the work will inspire the Berrigan Shire community to develop complementary large-scale murals to create a destination attraction.
“Secondly, the water tower is utilitarian and not very attractive.
“The tower is prominently located adjacent to Apex Park and the main street. An attractive artwork would enhance civic pride and pride of place.”
