The food relief service’s annual fundraiser has generated hundreds of thousands of dollars to feed locals in need since its inception, and organisers are aiming to add to that tally again next month.
“This year is a special one, it is the 10th anniversary of Make a Meal of June,” Foodshare executive officer Dee Healey said.
“Since beginning in 2017, this event has raised an incredible $835,000.”
The funds are raised through ticket sales to a three-course dinner event at The Woolshed, monthly partnerships (purchased during the event), donations and raffle ticket sales.
Last year’s midweek event raised $85,100, including a $15,000 donation from the Margaret Attwood Trust, and excluding raffle ticket sales, before an anonymous donation at the end of the night boosted the total to $110,000.
“This event just keeps getting bigger each year,” Ms Healey said.
“We are so grateful that the community has made Make a Meal of June a ‘must-go event’ on the local annual calendar.”
The event’s consistent growth is vital to keep up with increasing demand for food donations, with Shepparton Foodshare distributing 40 per cent more food this financial year to date than to the same time last year.
“Shepparton Foodshare has seen an alarming increase in need for its service,” Ms Healey said.
“Your support will contribute to our operating costs and help continue our vital local service that is working to improve food security in the local community.”
On average, Foodshare distributes 350,000kg of food to registered emergency relief services, schools, neighbourhood houses, community meals programs and faith organisations each year.
Foodshare rescues and receives food donations to redistribute for free and its registered agencies then collect the food for the people they support.
This year’s Make a Meal of June event will be held on Wednesday, June 10.
Tickets are $100 and include a three-course meal and welcome drink.
