This month’s market, in partnership with the Mooroopna Steering Committee, will offer mental health services alongside the traditional clothes, food and jewellery stalls.
The collaboration is set to target youth to give them an event that offers community connection and support.
Mooroopna market co-ordinator Kara Beggs said the market offered a financially family-friendly environment, aiming to bring the community together.
“We have created a welcoming space for all ages helping to break down barriers, bringing everyone together with local community and service groups, while enjoying free live music and low-cost children’s activities in Ferrari Park,” Ms Beggs said.
“Cost of living is affecting everyone physically and mentally right now, with winter blues here. My aim is to bring community together, out in the fresh air, enjoying face-to-face conversations again away from technology.”
The committee recognises how closely finances and mental health are linked and has arranged for Headspace Shepparton to have a stall at the market, offering free support to young people and families in need.
Mooroopna Steering Committee chairperson Rowan Farren-Parnell said he hoped the collaboration would bring supportive services, activities, food and a thriving social environment all into the one place.
“We live in an age where financial and social isolation occur in conjunction with each other,” Mr Farren-Parnell said.
“Our goal is to provide opportunities for our community both in the short and long-term, and this is one of the many initiatives we are working on to deliver a stronger, healthier and more connected Mooroopna.”
The free barbecue is being funded by Greater Shepparton City Council through the Neighbour Day grant and will be available between 9am and 10am to market goers.
