Almost 30 people who were tired of seeing litter around Shepparton assembled at Victoria Park Lake and picked up rubbish for Clean Up Australia Day on Sunday morning.

The event, which Greater Shepparton City Council and RiverConnect Shepparton-Mooroopna Urban Landcare Group ran, saw families and the environmentally-conscious combining to make the Goulburn River cleaner.
Council waste education officer Hilary Grigg said it was not surprising to see lots of young people attending the event, equipped with their own waste-managing gloves.
“We often find the people in the community we engage that have problems with rubbish is young people,” Ms Grigg said.
“There is a lot of waste dumped along the banks of the river, the lake, and playgrounds, so it’s definitely still an issue for this community.”
RiverConnect project officer and event organiser Meg Pethybridge said although her organisation had various events planned around the year, Clean Up Australia Day was well-attended.
“This morning, we had some people, really excited families, rocking up 15 minutes early,” Ms Pethybridge said.
“It’s all about contributing together and creating a sustainable future in Greater Shepparton.”
A free barbecue at Victoria Park Lake was on offer for those who got involved.
