The honour comes as part of last week’s celebrations for National Volunteer Week 2023, which aims to acknowledge the efforts of change makers in society.
Young Hugh's inspiring endeavour began when he conceived the idea of organising the Racquets Against Breast Cancer Tournament at the Wahgunyah Tennis Club.
With unwavering determination, Hugh embarked on a mission to raise funds for the National Breast Cancer Foundation. Despite his age, he demonstrated that one is never too young to make a meaningful impact.
The tournament, held earlier this month, received tremendous support from the local community. Fifty participants, along with nearly 100 attendees, gathered to enjoy the exciting matches and contribute to a worthy cause.
Thanks to their generous contributions, the event successfully raised over $3000 for the National Breast Cancer Foundation. The overwhelming success of the tournament has led to the decision to establish it as an annual event in the club's calendar.
Expressing their immense pride, Hugh's mother Katie shared her delight at his achievement. She described Hugh as a young boy with a passion for both tennis and the community.
"Hugh loves tennis, and he loves the community," Katie explained. "He is always coming up with ideas, and we are exceptionally proud of him.
“We were shocked when we found out he had been named the Tennis Victoria Community Champion of the Month, but looking at everything he has accomplished, it's clear that he truly deserves it.
“Initially we were apprehensive when he came up with the Racquets against Breast Cancer Idea but with the support of Sandra Johnstone at the Wahgunyah Tennis Club, and contacts at the Margaret Court Tennis Academy, he was able to pull it off.
“It was a great day with so many prizes donated to the cause.
“As a family, we are just so proud of his efforts. It’s nice to see young people wanting to help the community.”
Hugh's dedication to combining his passion for tennis with a noble cause has touched the hearts of many within the Wahgunyah community. His remarkable initiative and selflessness serve as a shining example, inspiring others to get involved and make a positive impact in their own communities.
Tennis Victoria commended Hugh for his outstanding efforts. " Congratulations Hugh and thank you for having such an impact in your community! Keep up the great work."
