YMGCR Bowls
Not a good week for the club with both the Midweek A1’s and the A2’s losing.

Due to the A1’s finishing on top, they got the double chance and now will face Wodonga in the cut throat Preliminary final.
This will be a very tough game as any Wodonga team seem to grow another leg when it comes to final’s time. But this week the side will be back to full strength with Spencer coming back.
The A1’s travelled to Benalla to take on Wangaratta and in a nail biting finish YMGCR came up 3 shots short, losing 59/62.
Stuart McNeill’s rink was in a tight battle all day and when they got a 4 on their last end, YMGCR looked like they were over the line, and they won 22/21.
Gary Sanders trailed for most of the day, but they hung in and only went down 14/18. Anne Miles rink jumped out to a commanding lead early but the Wangaratta rink came back strongly in the last four ends to get a draw 23/23.
These 2 teams have played 3 times now with YMGCR winning 2 and losing 1, the scribe is sure Anne and her teammates will do everything in their power to have another crack at the Wangaratta side.
Also, at Benalla the A2’s couldn’t get the job done losing to Moira 50/71 and falling out of the finals race. Ray Brown’s rink was in control most of the day and recorded a 24/15 win (that win would’ve given them RINK OF THE WEEK).
Bob Evans rink was getting smashed early and was behind over 20 shots, but the rink showed a lot of ticker to come back and they went down 15/26.
Goudgey started ok but in the end, they lost 11/30. It was a very good year for the A2’s. The section was a very even competition, one week you were on top of the table, then you lose you could fall back to fourth.
Unfortunately, YMGCR tapered away over the last 3 weeks and that showed up in the final, BUT they still finish 4th and to make finals is a great effort.
Like to thank all supporters who turn out to cheer the two sides at Benalla. The club greatly appreciate your encouragement and support.
Next Saturday the Weekend Pennant A1 team will be taking on Wodonga in the Grand Final at Corowa RSL. The club have never won an A1 GF before so do yourself a favour and get along and support the team.
This will be the clubs best chance, but it will be a very tough game as both teams have fantastic bowlers and the standard will be at the highest level.
Looks like YMGCR are going to have up to seven players representing the O&M group sides. Well done to Anne Miles, Clarie Sanders, Sue Middleton and Laureen Smith in the ladies and Garry Sanders, Stuart McNeill and old “Golden child” Micky Vaughan in the mens.
Friday Social bowls saw the return of the very popular format of nominated pairs. This week there were 12 teams and the winners were the Dodmans (Pam and “Zag” Dodman) and the runners up were Lil and Gavin Borwick.
Next weekend YMGCR will host the A3 Grand Final between Moira and ClubMulwala and B2 Grand Final between Chiltern and ClubMulwala.
ClubMulwala Outdoor Bowls
Tuesday, March 14 - Midweek Pennant - Qualifying Final
Division B1 – ClubMulwala 67 (12) defeated Swanpool 50 (2)
And, into the Grand Final we go. Ok, ok, let’s keep a lid on it.
The game was hard fought and Swanpool came out fighting and were winning two of the three rinks easily early on.
Cliff Morton and his team were keeping ClubMul in the game increasing a more than respectable margin on his rink.
With Judy Laughlin, Faye Cook and especially Malcolm Miller all contributing, the side maintained a narrow margin overall.
Barry Pitt and Loris Lochhead were well down early however with their teams maintaining a strong commitment to the side their games improved and the fight back was on.
What a great spectator sport this game was. Both the Swanpool and ClubMulwala sides were bowling fantastically well and the game could have gone either way.
Loris Lochhead, Jan Morton, Betty Richmond and Graham Albert made a late charge and got to within a respectable five points of their opposition which was no mean feat from where they were sitting early.
Barry Pitt and his team of Wade McPherson (great bowling mate), Anita Albert and Jodi Powell started to get their game together and in the end outplayed their opponents to score a great win.
Overall it was an exceptional game to witness and the side will have to take this form into the final next week. Well done team and a huge congratulations to Swanpool for making it this far.
Results as follows:
Loris Lochhead, Jan Morton, Betty Richmond and Graham Albert 17 lost to Jennifer Sievwright, Leslie Mitchell, Rosie Daws and Lorraine Marshall 23.
Cliff Morton, Malcolm Miller, Faye Cook and Judy Laughlin 27 defeated Sarah Mathieson, Margaret Blake, Gorden Renkin and Harry Barber 12.
Barry Pitt, Jodi Powell, Anita Albert and Wade McPherson 23 defeated Remo Ascenzo, Michael Turner, Judy Barber and Christine Armstrong 15.
Position – To the Grand Final.
Saturday, March 19 – Weekend Pennant Preliminary Finals
Division A3 – ClubMulwala 81 (14) defeated Milawa 73 (4)
The Milawa side is certainly proud and aggressive in their approach to their bowls and although they didn’t win at the end of the day, they still managed to take a win on two of the rinks.
Terry Hallinan and Peta Matty’s teams ended up by 12 and 3 shots respectively however these were countered by great wins by Kay Smith (12 shots up) and Daryl Dighton (11 shots up) thereby ‘bringing home the bacon’.
The President was so proud he even shouted drinks on the way home (with the clubs money of course). Well done Graeme.
It was a great day for bowls and although a little hot, it was okay so long as you kept the water up and rehydrating.
There was some excellent bowls played on the day and both sides were encouraging their players. There were not too many loose bowls (although a wrong bias was presented at a critical time on one rink) and every shot had to be earnt.
Results as follows:
Kay Smith, Eugene Hodson, Betty Richmond and Stephen McPhee 23 defeated Ronald Welfare, Colin Reid, Glen Allan and Lynn Allan 11.
Trevor Loe, Kerry Merrett, Mick Millsom and Jan Martin 15 lost to Peta Mattys, Mark Bell, Michelle Van Praagh and Jane Osmotherly 18.
Daryl Dighton, Malcolm Miller, Peter Humphreys and Bev Norwood 28 defeated Dave Allan, Kevin Allan, John Blackwell and Cyril Ciavarella 17.
Gary Parker, Graeme Arnold, Daryl Richmond and Jan Morton 15 lost to Terry Hallinan, Shane Cousins, Harry May and Norman Hallett 27.
Position – To the Grand Final.
Division B2 – ClubMulwala 58 (12) defeated Yarrawonga 50 (2)
Although the B2 side had a rink down on the day they managed a great win over a local rival. The Yarrawonga side are a proud group of players tough to beat at any time however the ClubMulwala lads and ladies were very determined on the day.
Paul Kelly from Yarrawonga had the one rink win by just three shots whilst Cliff Morton and Sam Smith and their teams were able to curb this with their three and eight wins respectively.
Results as follows:
James Murdoch, Liz Murdoch, Nola Mongor and Anita Albert 15 lost to Paul Kelly, Kim Johnston, Rosene Andrews and Neville Marsden 18.
Cliff Morton, Wayne Dowsey, Jodi Powell and Graham Albert 22 defeated Ted Edwards, John Levett, Valerie Kennedy and James Barnes 19.
Sam Smith, Mark Smith, Barry Martin and Judy Laughlin 21 defeated Michael Dixon, Noel Owen, Kay Ross and Kaylene Tait 13.
Position – To the Grand Final.
What a great way to finish the 2021-2022 O&M Bowling Season with two of the three teams in the Weekend Pennant Grand Finals and one of the three teams in the O&M Midweek Pennant Grand Final.
Regardless of what happens next week, the club can be so proud of their relative small group of players and those that support them.
Being the smallest club in the immediate area has not dampened their spirit, enthusiasm, team work or successes in recent years.
Good work members and good luck in your respective Grand Final games.

Pennant results –
Tuesday, March 15 - B1 played Moyhu in the Elimination Final held at Corowa Civic. Unfortunately they lost by just 7 shots over the 3 rinks, 51/58.
Keith Allender’s team got off to a good start getting a 5 early on. They were leading 9/3 on the 6th end then got stuck on 12 for 5 ends which made them 12/19 down by the 15th end.
They got off the 12 and went on to win 5 of the last 6 ends but just couldn’t quite close the gap going down 19/21.
Paul Kelly’s team had a fairly even game to start with and by the 15th end (with the help of a 4 on the 14th end) they held the lead 14/7.
They then got stuck on 14 for 4 ends then they got a 1 and a 3 giving them a 3 shot lead going into the last end.
They were holding 1 when the opposing skipper took the jack back and gave them a 5 and the win.
Tom Dodd’s rink had a very even game and found the lead going back and forth. It was 11 all on the 15th end and by the 18th end they held the lead by 2 shots.
Making it 14/12 unfortunately they lost the last 3 ends going down 14/17.
Congratulations to the B1 on getting into the finals. It is disappointing to get so close but you all gave it your best shot on the day.
Thank you to the emergencies; Kate and Mick for coming prepared to go on if needed.
Thank you to the members that travelled to Corowa to support the team.
Saturday, March 19 - B2 played the Preliminary Final against ClubMulwala at YMGCR. It was a very competitive but friendly game with ClubMulwala winning by 8 shots 50/58.
Congratulations to ClubMulwala on the win and the Yarrawonga Bowls Club wish them good bowling in the Grand Final.
Paul Kelly’s team did well winning their rink. They had a good competitive game all the way through, levelling 4 times.
They were 15 all on 18 then got the next 3 ends winning by 3 shots. Well done team.
Mick Dixon’s team were up against an experienced team. They started off 3/1 after the 4th end then got stuck on the 3 for 5 ends then again on 5 for 6 ends. For the rest of the game they were playing catch up. They won 4 of the last 7 ends so never gave up trying. A good effort team.
Ted Edward’s team took 2 ends to get going then got up 12/3 by the 6th end, then 3 shots on the 9th to make it 15/6.
Club Mulwala made the charge and kept them on 15 for 5 ends. By the 18th end it was 17 all, then 19 all going into the last end.
Club Mulwala’s skipper moved the jack back getting 3 shots and the win. A Great try team.
Well done B2 for getting into the Preliminary Final. Thank you to the emergencies; June and Eric for being ready to step in if needed.
Thank you to the spectators that came to support both teams in the finals, it was great to see.
