With last year’s series disrupted by the COVID-19 pandemic and cut from five rounds to three, Best is looking to make full use of his six-race calendar this year.
Consistent top-five finishes are the main goal for the 19-year-old, with this weekend’s season opener at the Mount Panorama 500 his first chance to impress since earning Rookie of the Round in the final race of 2020.
Coupled with a busy off-season, including joining a new team in Tickford Racing, Best is refreshed and raring to go this year.
“I’ve done a far bit of training since my last race, I bought a bike and have been cycling a bit and did a training camp in Melbourne with a few of the other drivers,” Best said.
“I’m definitely excited. Moving to Tickford, I feel part of the team now — it’s like one big family.
“And I feel the most prepared for a season that I have in a long time which gives you confidence going forward.”
Although Best’s former team MW Motorsport has produced the past two Super2 champions, Best said switching to Tickford Racing, which campaigns three Supercars, was partly motivated by his end-goal of racing in the Supercars Championship.
“It was more of a step forward, getting one step closer to the goal which is getting to the main game,” Best said.
“And just having that knowledge there, and the knowledge of their drivers to learn off has been great.”
The move also has Best back in the driver's seat of a Ford, as he transfers from a Nissan Altima L33 to the FG X Falcon.
And after two days of testing at his home track, Winton Motor Raceway, earlier this month, Best is more than ready to get his new rig among the action at Bathurst.
“It really didn’t take too long to get comfortable, it felt natural and was a good two days of testing,” Best said.
