Call for speed limit to be reduced from 100km/h to 60km/h after fatal crash

Fatal: State Member for Northern Victoria Wendy Lovell has spoken in parliament about a stretch of road where a Shepparton man died last month.

A local politician is calling for the speed limit on a stretch of road where a fatal crash occurred last month to be lowered from 100km/h to 60km/h.

State Member for Northern Victoria Wendy Lovell has called for a safety audit to be conducted on a section of the Euroa-Mansfield Rd between Gooram and Merton.

In a constituency question to Roads and Road Safety Minister Melissa Horne, Ms Lovell said the section in question was a 4.9km stretch of road from Ridge Rd to the Gooram Falls public car park.

In her contribution, Ms Lovell said there had been several serious collisions on the predominately 100km/h zone stretch of road, including a fatal collision just last month.

A 59-year-old Shepparton man died in a single-vehicle crash on the road about 10.15pm on July 9.

He was a passenger in a duel-cab ute that ran off the road and down a 10m embankment.

Ms Lovell said members of the local community, including local emergency services personnel such as Gooram CFA captain Michael Stubbe, had long advocated for the speed limit to be lowered from 100km/h to 60km/h from Ridge Rd to the car park, to make it safer for all road users.

Ms Lovell asked Ms Horne to ensure a safety audit was completed on the section of road.

“The local community knows the road better than anyone and I urge the minister to heed their advice and ensure a safety audit is carried out on the road with a view to lowering the speed limit to 60km/h,” Ms Lovell said.
