IDAHOBIT Day 2024

The Queens Gardens will be turning rainbow for the International Day Against Homophobia, Biphobia, Intersex Discrimination and Transphobia. IDAHOBIT celebrates the LGBTQ+ community and aims to raise awareness for the work still needed to increase acceptance and reduce discrimination. Expect a raising of the rainbow flag, live music from local queer young people, keynote speakers and more as you join in the celebrations.

9 to 5 The Musical opening night
With a sparkling score by Dolly Parton, 9 to 5 is a joyous smash hit full of mischief, laughter and affection. Inspired by the hit film, the musical follows three workmates, Doralee, Violet and Judy, who are pushed to the edge by their mean-spirited boss, Franklin Hart Jr. Through witty schemes and cunning tactics, they turn the tables on him in the most hilariously defiant ways. You can catch the feel-good show on May 17, 18, 19, 24 and 25.

SAM Talks: Kenny Pittock
Head over to SAM to hear the story behind Kenny Pittock’s art wall commission, Can You Peel The Love Tonight, which humorously elevates the humble can of fruit in a homage to the Goulburn Valley’s agricultural roots. Join Mr Pittock and SAM CEO Melinda Martin for an illuminating conversation exploring his pop art-meets-comedy creative practice. Can You Peel The Love Tonight will be displayed at SAM from May 18.

Do you remember? Drawn from Memory — Community art project
The Murchison community has joined forces to run creative workshops to bring people interested in visual arts together, where they will paint, draw and explore aspects of their personal past and local history. Local Goulburn Valley artists Philip Hickingbotham, Kerry Handwerk and Judith Roberts will help participants explore their artistic skills through one of four painting or textile and mixed media sessions. No experience is required, but a willingness to have fun and learn from skilled artists is essential.

Vesak Day Celebration
Queen’s Gardens is set to transform with flowers, lanterns, candles and a Buddha statue for Shepparton’s Vesak Day celebration. While millions of Buddhists worldwide will celebrate Vesak Day on Thursday, May 23, Shepparton’s community will mark the event on Saturday, May 18. Vesak is the most important Buddhist festival, commemorating the birth, enlightenment, and passing of Gautama Buddha, Buddhism’s founder. This celebration encourages Buddhists to reflect on Buddha’s journey and teachings. Celebrations will feature chanting and meditation, food sharing and a vibrant gathering that fosters a sense of connection and unity.

Wendy Matthews and Grace Knight - We’re Going to Graceland
Together, Wendy Matthews and Grace Knight are presenting their take on the work of one of the world’s greatest living songwriters, Paul Simon, in their new show We’re Going to Graceland. Both Matthews and Knight are multi-award-winning artists with an impressive haul of Countdown, MTV and ARIA awards and a slew of platinum albums between them. Despite having never performed together, the two have found magic in this new collaborative venture, fuelled by an innate chemistry and trust. Head over to Riverlinks to enjoy not only experiencing the singers belt it out, but also their unique interpretation of iconic songs that refuse to age.

Shepparton Bird Expo and Sale
People will have the chance to learn about, look at, buy, sell and trade many bird species at the Shepparton Bird Expo and Sale this weekend. The annual event has been running for over 36 years, with displays and sales of birds and associated products such as bird seed, medicines, toys, bird cages, bird boxes, and a wide variety of other accessories available to purchase. People from all over the state will be attending, so don’t let this opportunity fly by.
