Squally weather provided the major challenge for Merrigum golfers on Saturday when they contested a stroke round for the Privilege Cup. While only a couple of showers dampened the afternoon, the strong winds persisted throughout and made good scoring difficult.
Nobody told Jeff Parry that having a good round would be a challenge though as he put in one of his best to win the day with a great score of 100-32-68. That was a really good effort in such conditions and gave him a three-shot margin over his closest rival. He will now have the additional challenge of having one less shot on his handicap when he takes to the course next.
Andrew Wood headed the ball competition with a score of 83-12-71 and was joined by Phil Barca with 94-22-72. Woody clearly had the wind under a degree of control as he took the only two nearest-the-pins to go off, the ninth and the 14th.
There will be some handy cash up for grabs next week after nobody was able to get on the jackpot 12th for the second week in a row.
Least putts sponsored by Simon and Tash Doherty was won by James Campbell with 27.
One of our golfers appeared to be praying for divine intervention on the first when he was seen on his knees playing out of the drain adjacent to the fairway. Unfortunately just when it looked as though his prayers were answered with a perfect shot from a difficult position, his ball struck the power lines and had to be replayed. It then took two shots to extricate himself the second time.
Last Thursday's twilight competition was played in very warm conditions and was won by Phil Barca with a round of 47-11-36. Craig Doherty maintained his good form and was the runner-up with 47-10.5-36.5. He was also the least putts winner with 15. Nearest-the-pins were won by Bill Bray on the jackpot ninth and Andrew Wood on the 14th. The two-point cut was 39.5.
Next Saturday's event is stroke.
