Congupna is the final team standing undefeated in the Murray Football League after a 39-point victory over Finley in round five, returning to its home deck after redevelopments forced the club to play the first month of the season on the road.
The Road were hit by a plucky Cats outfit in the early going, trailing to the men in hoops by eight at quarter time, but responded with intensity around the contest in the second term to burst away to a 23-point half time lead.
Restricted to just a behind in the second term, Finley found attacking potency at the scoring end in the third term, kicking 5.5 to 3.1 and reducing the margin to 11 at the final change.
However the Road clicked into the premiership contender gear its become renowned for, and ruthlessly made the Cats roadkill in a seven-goal final quarter barrage to win 18.9 (117) to 12.6 (78).
Daniel Schaper, Bryden Squire and James Boyer were among Congupna’s best, the former lacing out seven majors on the day.
Jack and Will Sexton contributed three goals each for Finley, but the loss condemns the club to a shock 0-5 start, albeit its early schedule has been loaded with quality sides.
Finley has lost no game by more than three goals, against all current top six opposition, except for the 39-point defeat on Saturday.
The Cats will reassess over a bye in round six, while Congupna take on Rumbalara.
Around the grounds in round five, Cobram continued its string of hot form, defeating Mulwala by 61, while Numurkah sits in second place after restricting Deniliquin to just 17 points in a 48-point victory.
Nathalia won a tense battle over Moama 12.7 (79) to 11.4 (70), and Echuca United took home four premiership points after a narrow 13-point victory over Rumba.
