Keep it simple silly.
That’s when Tongala plays its best netball, according to coach Grace Hammond, when the players keep the game simple, don’t try to complicate the game and do the fundamentals well.
In a high-quality round five encounter between two of the Murray Netball League’s top sides, Moama and Tongala, it was focusing on the key basics that helped secure a tight victory for ‘Tonny’.
The match was close all day before Tongala started to take control of proceedings and claim the victory 54-46 at home on Saturday afternoon.
Hammond said although her side had a slow start to the match, Tonny’s troops were back on track after half-time as Tongala secured its fifth win from as many matches.
“We took two quarters to really get going,” she said.
“I was happy with our second half, but our start needed to be a lot better as Moama came out firing and we had to change a few things about our game.
“It’s always a really good contest coming up against them, but once we started playing our brand of netball in the second half and just turned it into a basic game, things started flowing our way.
“We just really focus on enjoying our netball, not complicating it as it doesn’t have to be a complicated game of netball as we just stick to our basics and do them really well.”
Tongala will now turn its attention to next weekend’s must-watch clash with top-of-the-table Rumbalara.
“It’s nice to be five and zip, but we have ‘Rumba’ this week, and we are both undefeated at the moment,” Hammond said.
“I think they are going to be the team to watch this year, so I’m really looking forward to this weekend.
“Not much needs to change on our end in regards to training and whatnot, just fine-tuning a few things that we didn’t do well on the weekend.”
In other round five Murray Netball League matches, Nathalia defeated Congupna by seven goals in a close encounter at home.
The Purples now sit third on the ladder with four wins and one loss after winning the match 35-28.
Cobram secured its second victory for the season after it beat Numurkah in a tight match, 42-38.
Mulwala sits just inside the top six after it defeated Echuca United by 15 goals (50-35).
Rumbalara continued its dominance of the Murray Netball League with a 30-goal victory over Deniliquin.
Led by coach Jess Bamblett, Rumbalara will look to become the only undefeated side left in the competition when it travels to Tongala next weekend.
Meanwhile, Finley sits fifth on the ladder after defeating Barooga 54-29 at home.
