Competing in the welterweight division, Newton was a comprehensive winner in his first semi-final bout, overcoming his opponent Samuel Zulch in resounding fashion.
Len Griffiths, Newton’s mentor, said the young gun came out swinging in the semi.
“He had a good scrap, fought real hard to get through to the final,” Griffiths said.
Newton came up against Marco Todisco in the big dance, after he too enjoyed a strong semi-final win.
Griffiths said Newton had work to do after being slow out of the blocks.
“He got off to a bit of a slow start, but fought back hard,” Griffiths said.
“He fought back in the last few rounds and came very close, he just got edged in the end.”
The young gun just went down in the decider, taking the fight right down to the wire after Todisco claimed the opening rounds.
The 23-year-old will continue to train at Griffiths’ LG Boxing, with sights set on a number of events in coming months.
In the thick of it: Tom Newton lays a punch during his semi-final bout.
