Mulwala has recorded its first win for season 2024 with an emphatic 63-point win over Barooga at Barooga Recreation Reserve last Saturday.
The Lions won 16.7.103 to 5.10.40, a pleasing result after a drubbing of 58 points in the first round against last year’s runner-up Congupna.
It was a consistent four-quarter effort by the reigning premiers who started out of the blocks quickly and matched Barooga in the second quarter to lead by some six goals at the main break to set up the big win.
Connor Griffith booted five for the winners and Will Gorman put three through the big sticks.
Better players were Griffith, Dylan McNamara, Harry Haely and Charlie McKenna.
Mulwala will host Finley this Saturday at Lonsdale Reserve and with Dayne Beams on board.

A Grade
Mulwala 51 defeated Barooga 25
Our brand new A Grade squad showed us all just how much a great preseason makes all the difference. The girl’s fitness and consistency was commendable. Their ability to set their pace for the game was impressive. Strong defence all day, and taking full advantage of rolling subs, these girls didn’t miss a beat.
Beautiful shooting from Ellie and everyone was excited to have Steph back on the court. Sophia is a welcomed addition to this squad and, along with Jedda and Georgie, the midcourt is in great hands.

Mulwala 32 lost to Barooga 42
A very contested game, grateful for the new Barooga courts. Our defence worked tirelessly all day. Cara Wood showing everyone how impressive her ability to read the ball really is. Nat Ferg’s ability to run all day, never ceases to amaze us. Then pulled on whites and umpired A Grade! And Mikyah and Tay made the most beautiful combination of the day in the goal ring. Excited for next week with some new things to work on. Not the result we wanted, but proud of how this team holds themselves.
Awards: Squires - Cara Wood; Jaycees - Mikyah Frauenfelder; Club Award - Nat Ferguson.
C Grade
Mulwala 42 defeated Barooga 36
After a loss last week the Lions were keen to get a win on the board and came out firing. Eliza made it hard for Barooga to score with lots of intercepts and rebounds. Kealy was also strong in defence and played with fire in her belly. These two are making a great defensive duo. Abbey showed her versatility playing all over the court, using her speed and ability to jump to force many turnovers. Piper was again dynamite in goals. A whole team effort with everyone starting to gel and each girl playing their role to come away with the win.
Awards: Jaycees - Eliza Robilliard; Yarrawonga Hotel - Abbey Matthews; MFNC Club Card- Kealy House.

Perfect start to round two with another win for the girls, the fierce defence that was displayed by Shell, Nat and Addye in the first minutes of the game was sure to set the standard. Hannah, Toot and Laura working hard down midcourt to feed seamlessly into the goals with both Kat and Laura working hard in the ring and the results showed on the scoreboard with Mulwala being in front each quarter. Mikayla and Charlie H taking the court and dominating in their positions, with the use of rolling subs throughout the last half in the midcourt keeping the quality of the game at a high standard.
