A solid start from the Jets’ top two and a clinical showing with the Kookaburra had Allen satisfied with his side’s return to the winners’ list.
“It was a pleasing win — it’s good to be back to winning ways,” Allen said.
Jets openers Ben Pedretti (40) and his skipper Mitch Brett (60) picked up where they left off from their Twenty20 heroics, putting on 106 runs between them before Brett departed in the 21st over.
“We had a really good start, we talked about the importance of our top four getting the job done in recent weeks,” Allen said.
“At drinks we were in a very good position, we had to work hard and to Old Students’ credit their spinners bowled really well.”
Liam Callegari was handed the ball in the 18th over and did a job for his side, extracting the key wicket of Joel Brett, who departed for four runs.
He struck again in the 34th over to rattle Nick Breslin’s stumps, sending the Jets’ danger man packing for 20 runs.
Sam O’Brien (3-36) kept the lower order quiet, but by then the damage was done, with a costly 46 Old Students extras having the Jets’ total breach the 200 mark.
The Students’ bats went about their work in similar fashion, openers Dillon Hammer (41) and Luke McPhillamy (28) guiding their side back into the mix.
Young gun Oscar Lambourn compiled an impressive 47 with some clean hitting, the run-rate eventually escaping the Students’ batter under pressure from the Jets’ bowlers, his side falling 18 runs shy.
THE GAME
Northerners 8-200 (Mitch Brett 60, Ben Pedretti 40, Sam O’Brien 3-36, Callan McCabe 2-40, Liam Callegari 2-42) d Old Students 8-182 (Oscar Lambourn 47 not out, Dillon Hammer 41, Luke McPhillamy 28, Grant Hutchins 2-34)
STAR PLAYER
Mitch Brett (Northerners): The Jets’ skipper led from the front against Students, forging not only a classy 60 runs, but a vital partnership alongside Pedretti which had Northerners in control of the game from the outset. A true captain’s knock.
