Shepparton United’s Blake Sofra and Demon-turned-Bear Archer Hueston sparked plenty of opportunities for Murray’s second clash against an AFL expansion club’s academy in as many weeks, with the Deakin Reserve duo producing nine shots on goal in the Bushies loss.
However, it was an inaccurate day in front of goal at Lavington Sports Ground, with the Bushrangers kicking 8.15 (63) to GWS’ 22.8 (140) in the 77-point loss.
Sofra split his shots equally, kicking 2.2 from 20 disposals, while Hueston capitalised on one of his five looks on goal, frustratingly unable to damage GWS despite running rings around the orange team’s defence.
Shepparton’s Jack Mellington produced one of his best outings yet though, named best on ground for a 28-disposal game that included a goal.
The game also saw Bears boy Maelan Allan get his first look at Talent League footy in 2026, while Angus Williams, Lincoln Brand, Hunter Howells and Spencer Sharp were more Shepparton products provided a run on Sunday.
In the girls Bushies match against the Giants, the scoreline faced a similar result, but two Shepparton United defenders continued to impress.
In the 3.3 (21) to 11.12 (78) loss, Leila Creevey and Lana Carroll both earned votes in the best, while Demons teammate Stella Freeman and Shepparton Swans’ Eve Cook made their debuts, the latter impressively contributing with defensive pressure - laying five tackles.
The Bushrangers travel to take on the Western Jets next Sunday.
