Wednesday Social Bowls
Wednesday saw a solid turnout of 28 bowlers for the usual format of three-bowl pairs played over over games of 12 ends. Games were played on both the west and east greens which were running well.
Winners on the day were the team of Chris Horne (S) and Keith Eade (L) who won both games with a plus 20 shot score. The runners up, Greg Green (S), and Bill Jenkins (L), also won both games with a plus 20 shot score and on a countback just failed to pip the winners. Third place went to the combo of Gary Lovell (S), and Lynne Baxter (L), with two games won and a score of plus 13 shots.
The Lucky Numbers were won by Mick Reilly and Norm Windebank. The Rolling Jackpot was won and went to the team of Colin Withers, and a visitor, Fred Donaldson, so the jackpot resets to $20 for next week’s game.
Friday Social Bowls
After the usual break over the pennant season, Friday Social bowls is back in full swing and the fine weather saw 38 players turn out for the traditional format of 2x4x2 played over one game of 18 ends. Both greens were utilised and were running extremely well.
The winners, who played triples on their rink, were the team of Ray Irvine (S), Ian Keat (2) and Doug McTier (L). The runners up were Ian and Marie Morffew, and the Consolation Prize went to the team of Bill Jenkins and Lynne Baxter.
Presentation Day
Presentation Day for the season just past was held on Sunday at the YMGCR Croquet Club. The day was well attended, and the format was an alfresco BBQ and drinks, with presentation of trophies. The function was enjoyed by all who attended and with the fine, mild weather and entertainment ensured a successful afternoon. Great days like this don’t happen by accident and the organisers of the day Ian and Maire Morffew deserve congratulations on a wonderful event.
Thanks also go to those volunteers who so capably helped run a terrific day they were, Greg Fisher, Danny McNeill, Ron and Jill Lamson, Lynne Baxter and Col Withers. The trophy winners were, Men’s Club Championship Singles: Winner, James LeFevre, Runner Up, Michael Vaughan. Ladies Club Championship Singles: Winner, Laureen Smith, Runner Up, Jan Morton. Ladies Pairs Championship: Winners, Anne Miles and Shirley Hummel, Runners Up, Laureen Smith and Rhonda Irvine. Men’s 21 up Handicap: Winner, Garry Sanders, Runner Up, Wayne Lowrie. Ladies 21 up Handicap: Winner, Claire Sanders, Runner Up, Robyn Moore. Men’s 100 up Proportional: Winner, Julian Jones, Runner Up, Wayne Lowrie. Ladies 100 up Proportional: Winner, Anne Miles, Runner Up, Jan Morton.

Social Bowls
March 27
Another great turnout for our Social Bowls this week with 22 members and visitors enjoying the sunshine. Awesome to have Craig McFarlane from Frankston and Roy Baker from Hobart on the greens catching a few rays and enjoying their bowls. A huge welcome to our new members Shanny and Mike. Winners on the day were Ian Price, Faye Cook, Mel Garth and Ray (punter) Whybrow.

Club Championship Matches - Club Mixed Pairs Update
On March 25 a very entertaining Mixed Pairs Semi-Final was held with Kay Smith and Stephen McPhee (14) defeating Geoff Bullen and Mel Garth (12). A great effort by Kay and Steve to come from behind for the win in the last couple of ends. Geoff and Mel should also be congratulated on their efforts. As fairly new bowlers to the sport they have shown that they will be valuable members to the club and also to the sport in general.
March 28 – The Mixed Pairs Final was played between Kay Smith and Stephen McPhee and Daryl and Betty Richmond. In a hard fought, great spectator game Daryl and Betty ran out winners 20/19. Congratulations to all participants and in particular to the winners.

Update – Friends In Common Tournament
An update to the exceptional effort by our club to raise funds for the local Friends In Common Tournament held on March 24. The total raised was $4872.15 which will wholly go to assisting those in the community on their cancer journey. Thank you to the very generous bowlers and spectators on the day, the ClubMulwala members and visitors and our wonderful community and especially those businesses who sponsored in various ways. In particular ClubMulwala, Bunnings, Fish Camp Ski, Byramine Homestead and Brewery, Nicole and Wade McPherson, Hicks Butchers and Trevor and Karen Loe.
2024 Duke of Edinburgh Shield
To all RSL Members participating in this year’s Edinburgh Shield there will be a get-together for a roll up and payment of $52 per player (which includes raffle, meals, etc) on Thursday, April 11 at 3.30pm. Sides will be displayed on the greens notice boards at ClubMulwala and YMGCR.

Yarrawonga Bowls
The Club has been extremely busy leading up to and including Easter. A working bee was organised first of all to get the club and surrounds spic and span for the four-day Easter Tournament. Thank you to all those that turned up, you did a great job.

Our four-day Easter Tournament started off on Good Friday with Affiliated Open Pairs. The winning team was L. Nicholson’s (Rushworth) 2nd – M. Johnson’s (Nth Balwyn) 3rd - B. Turton’s (Composite) 4th – D. Andrews (Ballarat) Best 1st, 2nd, 3rd and 4th game winners were the teams of P. Standaert, Mick Crawford, T, Roalston and Jhett Wyatt.
Easter Saturday was Affiliated 2 Bowl Triples. Winners – N. Chaplin (Nth Balwyn) 2nd – G. Wood (Sunshine RSL) 3rd – T. Selwood (Wangaratta) 4th – G. Howgate (Mitcham). Best 1st, 2nd, 3rd and 4th game winners were the teams of; Jock McQualter, P. Standaert, Mick Szabo and Evelyn Calder.
Easter Sunday was Affiliated Open Pairs (2-4-2) Winners – Jhett Wyatt (Seymour) 2nd – G. Presnall (YMGCR) 3rd – C. Sellick (Bundoora) Mick Crawford (YBC)
Easter Monday Affiliated 2 Bowl Triples. Winners – M. Bayliss (Wodonga) 2nd S. Tatnell (Cobram) 3rd – T. Selwood (Wangaratta) 4th – D. Cooper (Creswick). Best 1st, 2nd and 3rd game winners were; L. Nicholson, Ken Chamberlain and Mick Crawford. Quite a few teams were composite teams so just the skip’s name and suburb is documented.
There was a large raffle drawn at the finish of the weekend so thank you to the following for their donations – Kim Silver, Bunnings Yarrawonga, YBC, Uppercut Maintenance and Cleaning, Rich Glen Yarrawonga and Yarrawonga Lakeview Motel.
There were so many people involved in the running of this four-day tournament that the scribe won’t mention any by name as she would hate to miss anybody. Just a huge thank you to all of the many people that helped in so many different ways to make this tournament as successful as it was. It was amazing to see so many bowlers come from far and wide to support this weekend, we wish them well and we hope to see them return again next year or even before.

This week’s social bowls
Social Bowls will be held on Wednesdays and Saturday’s weather and numbers permitting. The sheets are out for names to go down, visitors welcome.
Saturday, April 13, Social Bowls, format decided depending on numbers playing. Monday April 15, 2-4-2. These games start at 12.30pm and names need to be down by 11am on the day.
