Paul Burnett and champion defender Lachie Smith are taking on assistant roles under new senior coach Brad Edwards.
Edwards said he was rapt to get Smith and Burnett on board to support him in his first senior coaching stint.
‘‘Paul jumped at the chance to get back with the club, which is really good, and it’s just great to have Lachie on board as well in a leadership role,’’ Edwards said.
Burnett played for the Bombers from 1999 to 2007, captaining the team in seven of these nine seasons years in a 160-game career with the club.
After his days with the Bombers, he had two coaching stints for a total of six years with Kyabram District League club Lancaster, leading it to the 2011 flag.
Burnett said he got a call ‘‘out of the blue’’ from Edwards about taking on one of the assistant coaching roles with the club.
‘‘I’ve been around the club with (son) Tom playing in the thirds for the past couple of years, but it will be nice to be back in an official role with the club,’’ Burnett said.
Smith joined the Bombers in 2016 after being a member of the 2015 Benalla side that beat Kyabram for the flag.
He is one of the standout defenders in the league and is still only 26 years old.
‘‘I’m really loving my time at Ky, so why would I stop now?’’ Smith said.
