The middle of winter can mean smaller fields in the competitions as many golfers opt to find some sun for a while. Both the Wednesday and Saturday women’s competitions were low in numbers this week but the few who were there still made a go of it despite it being difficult to score well. Di Byrne (18) was the winner on both Wednesday and Saturday with scores of 31 pts and 28 pts respectively.
In the men’s Wednesday stableford competition, the top score of the day was 37 points. It was scored by both the A grade winner, Mark Fountain (11) and the B grade winner, Bill Stevens (24) being fortunate that they were in different grades. The nearest the pin on the 4th stayed with the club, the 6th was won by Gary Neville and both the 12th and 17th went to Mark Corradin. A score of 33 points on a count was required for the ball pool.
In the mixed 9 holes it was great to see Vic Bottaro (27) back out on the course and having a win with 18 points. Phil Block and Duncan Chisholm had the next best score both with 17 points and Stubby Byrne also made the ball pool with 14 points.
On Friday, the social 6 holes was stableford over holes 10-15. Ian Richardson (7) had a good score of 14 points to win and Mick Prorok was the runner up with 11 points.
On Saturday, the men played a four ball aggregate stableford event. To make it a bit more interesting, the pairs were not known until after the cards were in when a random draw took place. Mick Prorok (8) had the best score of the day with 42 points and drew Gary Wright (11) as his partner with 31 points to give them the best combined score of the day of 73 points. The runners-up were Peter Sawyer (7) and Michael Papworth (22) who had a total score of 70 points. The nearest the pins went to Mick Prorok on the 4th, Greg Pell on the 6th, Roger Edwards on the 12th and Michael Papworth on the 17th. The drive and pitch on the 8th and 15th both went to Mark Corradin. The ball pool went to those with a score of 37 points or better.
Next Friday the social 6 holes is stroke over holes 1-6. On Saturday the men will be playing for the monthly medal while the women have a par round.

A par event was on offer with a full field of players present due to the recent winter pennant coming to an end. As has been the case throughout the winter thus far, good scores were hard to come by with the exception of our days winner Shane McCormick compiling a very impressive +3. McCormick was dressed for success with a new kit modeled off American major winner Brooks Koepka but without the muscles. Jeremy Ezard’s run of easy wins was ended with a full field robbing him of another soft win. Ezard was runner-up with a square result just ahead of a resurgent John James also on square for the day.
The nearest the pins went the way of Dave Fullager with a stunning strike on the 3rd, Jeremy Ezard floating one onto the 13th and Phil Neville getting the lucky bounce to take out the 16th. Next week will be a monthly medal with S. McCormick on office duty and B. Leviston in the bar.
