THE PREP students at Lockington Consolidated School made their superhero status known as their entry into the Campaspe Shire's The 2019 Waste In Campaspe – Know, Educate, Do (WickED) Sustainability Awards took home the top prize.

With the theme ‘avoid, reduce, reuse - keeping food waste out of landfill’, the students created a music video which went through all the initiatives the school has in place to make them more sustainable.
Their adorable superhero costumes and innovative ideas were just some of the reasons prep teacher Jenny Howlett believed they got over the line.
“We just wanted to show everyone what we do here at the school to be more sustainable and to us this was a great way of doing it,” she said.
After filming the students over the course of a day and hours of editing outside school time, their superhero-themed video captured how passionate the students are about saving the planet.
For the past term, the class has been focusing on the issue as a part of their studies.
“Every term we do an enquiry unit about a certain topic, whether it be toys or animals or anything in between,” she said.
“This term our theme was sustainability so we've been doing a lot of learning around that and how to keep our school sustainable.”
Recycling bins in classrooms, orange-lidded soft plastic bins and feeding classroom scraps to their chickens are just some of the initiatives the students have implemented in their school and showcased in the winning video.
But this isn't their first win in awards.
“We didn't enter last year, but we did in 2017 and our prep class won that one as well which was great,” she said.
The school has been awarded $500 to put towards a project at school.
“We've started building a mud kitchen out in the yard for the children so we're hoping to use the money to get some water flowing to it and just finishing that off,” Jenny said.
