On Saturday, May 4, St Alban’s Anglican Church will unleash the beast that is its annual Monster Garage Sale.
Lines of floating clothes, an array of books, furniture begging to make itself at home, electrical items, loose silverware, kitchenware and homeware — everything and a kitchen sink.
Yes, really, there’s a kitchen sink up for grabs.
According to Fr Simon Robinson, the garage sale has become a cornerstone event for the church and its charitable efforts.
“Last year, we raised $8500, and over the last five years, including the year off from COVID-19, we raised well and truly over $30,000,” he said.
The chosen charities to reap the rewards vary yearly to “share it around”.
In previous years, donations have been made to Shepparton FoodShare, People Helping People, the Caroline Chisholm Education Foundation, Horses For Hope, and the local Salvation Army.
This year’s funds will once again be split between charities.
But first, items have to sell.
Deal hunters and thrifters will have their eyes peeled as they navigate bins, shelves and boxes for something that piques their interest.
Whether there to snag a bargain or a sausage hot off the barbecue, all can agree on one thing: the annual event brings out the best in people.
Last year, a woman walked in and had a look around, but no item had sung to her.
“On her way out, she handed us a note and then walked out empty-handed,” Fr Robinson said.
“After she left, we realised she’d given $100 without buying anything — she just liked what we were doing.
“We’re really touched by those acts of kindness and the community’s support, whatever they choose to give.
“I know people will support us again this year, and we’re very grateful for their generosity.”
The Monster Garage Sale is on Saturday, May 4, from 8am to 3pm, at St Alban's Anglican Church, 15-17 Young St, Mooroopna.
