The centre was officially opened by Mitchell Shire Mayor Fiona Stevens on Friday, May 5.
It will open to the public in the coming weeks after the final touches are completed.
The building has been constructed with sustainable materials, has a 50kw solar system on the roof and rainwater system for all of the site’s water needs.
The facility’s ‘circular economy’ approach seeks to educate residents on the importance of reusing resources and minimising waste sent to landfill.
The drive-through located at 470 Seymour-Tooborac Rd, Hilldene spans two levels with designated areas to drop off specific items.
Any waste items that aren’t able to be recycled will be deposited at the end of the visit into general waste bins to be sent to landfill.
If you separate your own rubbish, many items can be dropped off for little or no charge.
There will be a ‘reuse shop’ on-site for unwanted goods and designated education space to host tours and workshops for schools and the community.
The project was jointly funded by Mitchell Shire Council and Sustainability Victoria on behalf of the Victorian Government.
Cr Stevens said Mitchell Shire was seeing significant population growth and that this facility was part of preparing for that growth.
“The construction of this facility will ensure that council can maintain compliance with the significant changes we have seen in the waste and resource recovery sector over the past few years,” Cr Stevens said.
“The Mitchell community has told us that reducing our environmental impact is important.
“Changing from a linear economy to a circular economy provides more benefits to our environment and our shire more broadly. We are excited to move towards this new way of thinking for waste management.”
