Home-town hero Fenaughty overcame fellow Numurkah player David Poole 6-3 in the final, which tournament director Dave Ludington said was some of the “best tennis” he'd seen played at Numurkah Lawn Tennis Club.
Poole and Fenaughty had to earn their respective final spots the hard way as the biggest field for some time of 18 players vied for the men’s open singles crown.
Fenaughty defeated Melbourne’s John Zahra 6-1 in their semi-final, while Poole overcame Mark Mills 6-2 in an entertaining encounter.
Fenaughty and Poole traded great shots with some long rallies in hot conditions, but Fenaughty nailed the vital break to lead 5-3 and then broke Poole's serve in the final game to extend his rule to five in a row.
Ludington said he wasn't aware of anyone who'd won that many.
In the women's draw, Echuca’s Genevieve Bush proved too steady for Numurkah’s Caitlyn Price to take their final match 8-3 with both playing some excellent tennis.
The men’s grade title was battled out by two youngsters in Numurkah’s James Kam and Shepparton’s Will Clurey with Clurey proving a little too good in the final wash up, taking home the prize 8-4.
Shepparton’s Natasha Dodos proved to be far too good for her opposition when she defeated James Kam’s Penguins teammate Billi Fasano 8-1 in the final to take out the wonen's B-grade title.
Ludington said it was great to see Numurkah talent ruling the courts, and he loved the atmosphere the tournament created.
“We had some really good social vibes,” he said.
Saturday night was a banquet of pizza and salad, with Ludington himself spinning tracks on the DJ deck on the barmy evening.
“We were very lucky with the weather, in the lead-up we were thinking ‘what can we do?’ ” he said.
“We ended up starting at 8am and got through as many events as we could on Saturday."
