The David Moran-trained driven stallion put his rivals to the sword over the concluding stages of the $110,000 Group One 2710m feature after being forced to race for the entire trip outside the Clayton Tonkin-prepared and Kate Gath-driven Out To Play who sought the early lead and got it.
Moran didn’t panic or press for the lead when it was obvious it wasn’t going to be given up without a fight and was content to let his star do the all the work in the run, justifiably confident he was more than up to the challenge.
For a moment in the home straight Out To Play looked as if he was going to make a race of it, but Lochinvar Art’s scorching 53.1 last half put paid to his rivals.
Out To Play battled on bravely for second more than 6m from the winner, while rising star Wolf Stride ran some sensational final sectionals to finish third, more than 11m from the winner.
It was Lochinvar Art’s 27th win and with the $62,700 first prizemoney took his career earnings to $1,083,456.
And he will get the chance to boost this total considerably at his next start on Saturday week at Melton when he tackles the $500,000 Hunter Cup.
