Neale Daniher’s death this week has prompted a series of heartfelt posts and gestures by locals.

Daniher’s impact through FightMND has changed the national conversation around motor neurone disease, and helped raise more than $115 million for research and support.
Impacted by MND himself, his legacy continues to drive the push to make MND a notifiable disease, a step advocates say is essential to building the data needed to find a cure.
In a public showing of respect, Mayor Ashley Hall opened proceedings of Tuesday’s council meeting wearing a beanie in Daniher’s honour.
Council also has plans to light up the Deniliquin Town Hall in blue on the day of his funeral.
Deni Bakery on a roll
Ever wondered what an award winning sausage roll tastes like? Well now you can find out.
Deniliquin Bakery in north Deniliquin recently earned a bronze award for their sausage rolls.
The honour was bestowed on them in the national competition for Australia's Best Sausage Rolls by the Baking Association of Australia for 2026.
National Reconciliation Week
Edward River Council recognised National Sorry Day, part of National Reconciliation Week, by lighting up the Deniliquin Town Hall on Tuesday.
The dates for the week remain the same each year; May 27 to June 3, with National Sorry Day on May 26.
These dates commemorate three significant dates in the reconciliation journey, the successful 1967 referendum, the High Court Mabo decision, and the release of the Bringing Them Home report.
National Reconciliation Week is a time for all Australians to learn about our shared histories, cultures, and achievements, and to explore how each of us can play our part to collectively build relationships and communities that value Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples, histories, cultures, and futures.
Flower power
There has been a bit of buzz about some flowering beauty springing up as autumn comes to an end.
Last month, one of the NSW Government Murray Local Land Services staff members spotted a patch of Garland or Wilcannia lilies flowering on a travelling stock reserve north of Deniliquin.
Murray LLS has said the native lilies are known to respond to summer and autumn rainfall, emerging and flowering when conditions are just right.
When you’re travelling around the district, keep an eye out for more beautiful natural attractions after the recent weather conditions.
Foundry Art Prize
Artists are being invited to enter Echuca’s Foundry Arts Space’s Art Prize, which this year has a theme of ‘Nature Speaks’.
It will celebrate a variety of art forms, encompassing expressions of nature in art and socially and ecologically motivated works. Artists are also asked to submit a written commentary of their work and how it responds to the theme.
The overall winner will receive $2500, followed by $750 for the runner-up. The Local Artist, People’s Choice and Hangers’ Prizes will each be awarded $500.
Artists have until Tuesday, June 30 to enter, with a $25 fee for foundry members and $30 for non-members.
Works will be showcased in the public exhibition from July 17 to August 16.
Pick up a form at the gallery, or enter online at thefoundryartsspace.org.au/art-prize.
Stoma support group
Local stoma patients are being invited to a community information session next week, which could become a regular support group.
The aim is to bring together those in the community who have undergone surgery to create a stoma - requiring the use of a colostomy bag - to share ideas and make new friendships.
The session will also be attended by two stomal therapists who can offer advice.
It will be hosted at the Intereach Community Centre in Deniliquin from 10.30am to noon on Monday, June 1.
Following the support meeting, there will be a stoma clinic for anyone who needs a review of their stoma. This will be held from 10.30pm to 2pm.
For more information about the support meeting, or to book a stoma review, call stomal therapist Nicole Smith on 0412 324 136.
Blues steal game one
A red card saw the NSW Blues mount a mighty comeback and chase a 20 point comeback, with Origin game one finishing 22-20.
It may not be the dominant sport around Deni, but be sure to expect plenty of talk this week, a finish like that gets any sport fan fired up.
Origin game two is set for June 17, at the MCG, where hopefully the men can follow in the women’s footsteps and seal it without a decider.
