The Pat Hayes Centre at Kyabram District Health Service had a jolly transformation for a Christmas in July event on Thursday, July 17.

Part of the hospital’s recently re-branded KyConnex social program, a holiday-themed lunch was served for attendees, complemented by festive decorations and music.
Co-ordinator Nikita Saunders said the program was run for people in the Kyabram, Tongala, Stanhope and Girgarre areas who, predominantly, were over 65 and living independently.

“We run a whole range of activities, bus trips and outings pretty much every day of the month,” she said.
“We just try to get everyone in the community connected when they lose those connections, whether they retire or if they’re moving up, new to the area.”
Margaret Meldrum, who moved to Girgarre from Botanic Ridge in Melbourne, has recently become involved with the program.

She said it had helped to ease her out of her comfort zone, and that those involved had been incredibly supportive.
“It’s been fantastic. The people are beautiful, they really are. They look after you, and I’m quite happy with them,” Ms Meldrum said.
“I’ve done more up here socially than I did in the city. Up here, everyone’s friendly.”
Jim Miller, who lives in an independent unit at Warramunda Village, said he initially joined the program to participate in an exercise group.

He has since attended other events, and said the Christmas in July lunch, which included games and activities, had been good fun.
“I’ve found it very enjoyable. You get to meet people of similar capabilities and similar interests,” Mr Miller said.
“I joined in the community ... and thoroughly enjoy the outings we have.”
KyConnex clients are sent a monthly roster of events, and can choose to attend whichever ones are of interest to them.
A small cost is associated with each event, but the program is largely funded through My Aged Care for clients with a managed care assessment.
Ms Saunders said the co-ordinators could help people to apply for the group and walk them through the care assessment process.
