Needing nine to win off the last over, Students’ Tim Looby stepped up to the occasion and achieved every kid's childhood dream and won the match with three balls to spare.
The experienced head crunched a full delivery over the rope for six and, along with not out batsman Liam Callegari, secured his side a remarkable four-wicket victory at Princess Park.
Onlookers were treated to an extraordinary game of cricket, but one wished he was out there in the heat of the action.
“I get really nervous when I'm watching. I would rather be out there in the middle,” Old Students skipper Callan McCabe said.
“But Loobs was amazing, we all said if it's anywhere full it will go for six.
“It was a fantastic win and an unbelievable feeling after the match.
“To be undefeated after three rounds is fantastic. It's really important to win these early games before Christmas and it's a lot easier if you don't have to chase wins.”
After winning the toss and batting first, United looked in a world of trouble early in its innings.
The home side stumbled to 2-11, before two more quick wickets left it 4-68.
But two outstanding and gallant half-centuries from skipper Dwain Vidler (73 runs) and Rehan Bari (50) put United back on track.
The duo combined for a 125-run partnership which steered United to a commanding total of 8-209.
And it was a horror start to the run chase for Old Students.
Opener Felix Odell departed for a duck and before long, United was in complete control with the visitors limping at 4-67.
But a gutsy 90-run knock from in-form batsman Nick Breslin and a handy 45 from Brendan Crouch lifted Old Students up off the canvas.
By the time the pair departed the crease, Old Students needed a further 25 runs for victory.
“Bres is doing a fantastic job, our three wins have been carried by him with the bat,” McCabe said.
“Hopefully his great form continues, but the rest of us need to step up and help out. We can't keep relying on one player to get the job done.
“And I thought Brendan batted superbly. We were in trouble and we needed somebody to bat with Bres and he did. It was the best he has batted and it was his highest A-grade score.”
But McCabe was full of praise for his side's top-scorer.
The talented all-rounder has already sailed past his total of runs from last season in just three knocks and is scoring for fun at the moment.
“When he's in this type of form he is really hard to stop,” McCabe said.
“I've only played with him for a season, but I heard how good of a player he is and now I'm seeing it out in the middle which is fantastic.”
THE GAME
Old Students 6-210 (Nick Breslin 90, Brendan Crouch 45, Luke McPhillamy 24, Kristian Veal 2-22) d Shepparton United 8-209 (Dwain Vidler 73, Rehan Bari 50, Callan McCabe 3-30, Chris Russell 2-36)
STAR PLAYER
Nick Breslin (Old Students): A classy 90-run knock kept his side within touching distance and the vital wicket of Keegan Armstrong complemented his sublime work with the bat. Looby's final over six will be long talked about, but Breslin's 93-ball innings was the main reason Students had a chance of winning late in the piece.
