With only six members attending the church, the time has come to close the doors.
Uniting Church Australia member and long-time past member of the church Heather Turner said the church had come a long way since its inception as a Methodist church in 1877.
“They (Methodist community) worked very hard to build the church out there. They carted bricks by horse and cart,” she said.
“In 1963, a flood went through Pine Lodge and for several months they had worship in the hall before it was plastered back up ... At one stage they enlarged the Goulburn channel behind the church and detonated something, which put cracks in the walls.”
Despite changes to its structure over time, it’s the last standing building of Pine Lodge.
Ms Turner said the church had brought a lot to the area and she was sad to see it go.
“There’s been some wonderful faithful workers for the church over the years ... It’s a shame to see it close but time changes and things happen and we all get older, don’t we,” she said.
“The church has been the life of the district.
“They’ve looked after so many people there in the community and they’ve been there to support the people through crises. They’ve catered for baptisms and funerals and weddings.”
Pine Lodge Uniting Church secretary Ros Galt said they would be starting the day with a service and a presentation on the history of the church.
“One of the local ladies (will speak), she was born and bred in the area, she married there and is connected to the church. So, I’m sure she’ll give a lovely history and memories of the church,” she said.
This will be followed by a morning tea and the opening of a time capsule, which has been continually added to every few decades.
“It’s been renewed a couple of times — the last time was in 1994,” Ms Galt said.
“This time capsule is being taken out earlier then expected but it’s our last service ... There will be people there (on Saturday) that have put things in from 1994 and before.
“People will be able to add to it and by the end of the month we’ll collect donations and replace it. We’ll add to what’s already there.”
The time capsule will be placed and sealed behind the church’s foundation stone, waiting to be opened again one day in the future.
The service will be held at Pine Lodge Uniting Church, 580 Pine Lodge Rd, from 10am to 1pm.
