Due to demand, Moama’s street delivery service for letters and parcels will be expanded to include about 600 additional households in new estates.
Federal Member for Farrer Sussan Ley was in Moama last week to make the announcement.
The expansion was necessary due to increased parcel volumes and the low availability of PO boxes at Moama Licensed Post Office, following considerable growth in the community in the past few years.
Eligible households will be notified by letter and will need to install a suitable letterbox. The new service arrangement will take effect on Monday, July 1.
Ms Ley was ecstatic to announce the expansion of delivery services, particularly as she had received extensive feedback from the community about the issue.
“My office has worked for three years with Australia Post and the wonderful Moama community to try and get letterbox deliveries to our new estates,” she said.
“People who move to a house not far from the CBD deserve a letterbox and delivery service.
“Community members contacted my office and raised the issue with me. Every time I spoke with someone who was out there or moving out there, they would express either disappointment or surprise that they didn’t have a letterbox.
“They felt they were in town just like everyone else and didn’t understand why it couldn’t happen, but now it has.”
During the announcement, Ms Ley spoke about Moama’s extensive growth in recent years as the catalyst for requiring a new delivery service and the value of people being able to receive mail directly to their homes.
“It’s really important. If you move to town, you’d like to have your mail delivered to your mailbox,’’ she said.
“Mail still matters a great deal. A lot of people think that in the social and digital age that mail isn’t so important, but it is, and I don’t want to see any stepping back in delivery times or services, and I certainly didn’t want to see a new location without a mail delivery.”
Australia Post business partner Shaun Malone emphasised the demand for the delivery service in the area and its positive impact on the Moama community.
“Everyone wants mail and parcels delivered to their door,’’ he said.
‘’Previously, they had PO boxes, and now the new delivery will be a bonus for them as it is something that the community has been wanting and waiting for.
“Since COVID, Moama has experienced phenomenal growth and people love to shop online. The demand for delivery is high and it is definitely the way to go.
“I think it’ll be good for the community and good extra work for us. It’ll benefit Moama in a lot of ways.”
