By joining ASV Shepparton on the third Thursday of every month at Shepparton Library, locals can learn more about astronomy while also taking part in a sidewalk astronomy session.
Established in February 2022, ASV Shepparton is a growing community of astronomy enthusiasts from across the region.
ASV Shepparton member Derek Poulton said the group was driven by a goal of bringing together people who shared an interest in astronomy.
“We bring together individuals in the Shepparton region who share a fascination with the wonders of the cosmos,” he said.
“Through engaging programs and projects, we cultivate and nurture interest in all branches and aspects of astronomy and we provide accessible pathways for young people and the general public to actively engage in astronomy.”
Joining ASV Shepparton is simple, with anyone becoming a member of the Astronomical Society of Victoria automatically joining the Shepparton branch if they live in the local region.
Membership provides access to a variety of benefits, including Shepparton-specific events, the local telescope loan program and statewide ASV activities and facilities.
“We offer concessional membership options, and junior membership is currently free of charge,” Derek said.
“We gather at the library on the third Thursday at 7pm in Shepparton, and members have the flexibility to join these meetings either in person or via Zoom.
“Please note that some months we may organise special stargazing activities, in which case there will be no formal meeting, and we also occasionally meet at Ardmona Community Centre.”
ASV Shepparton is encouraging anyone with an interest in the night sky to get involved.
“Together, let’s explore the cosmos, broaden our knowledge and enjoy the wonders of the night sky,” Derek said.
