Driver allegedly fled crash and hid in courthouse

Chaotic scenes ensued as a driver allegedly ran off and hid in the courthouse after a three-vehicle crash in Shepparton on Friday, March 15.

The man’s navy blue Ford XR6 was involved in a three-vehicle collision with a Ford ute and a silver Holden Commodore at the intersection of Wyndham and Vaughan Sts just after 11am.

Police said the 26-year-old Shepparton man driving the XR6 was allegedly seen by a police officer running from the crash and into the Shepparton courthouse at the intersection of Wyndham and High Sts.

Crash: The driver of this Holden Commodore was not hurt, but the vehicle was extensively damaged.

He was found by police allegedly hiding in the courthouse and was escorted from the building by police.

He will be interviewed at a later date and is expected to be charged on summons with charges including leaving the scene of an accident, failing to render assistance at an accident and reckless conduct.

Damaged: The driver of this XR6 allegedly ran from the crash scene.

An 85-year-old Wyuna man driving the ute was taken to Goulburn Valley Health by ambulance in a stable condition with upper body injuries.

The driver of the Holden Commodore, a 67-year-old Shepparton East man, was not injured in the crash.

All three vehicles had to be towed from the scene.

The crash caused traffic mayhem in Shepparton, with Wyndham St closed between Sobraon and High Sts, and traffic diverted around the scene for about two hours.
