The program aims to connect secondary students in the region with mentors to develop mechanical-based skills, such as basic car maintenance or building a small engine.
But the start depends on two things: hiring a co-ordinator, and purchasing an air-conditioner.
Strategic projects coordinator Amy Robinson said they had just begun advertising the co-ordinator position, which does not necessarily need to be filled by a qualified mechanic.
“We just need someone who's handy, mechanically-minded, and wants to work with young people,” Ms Robinson said.
She said the DECA Shepparton space also needed an air-conditioner, and the organisation had been crowdfunding for a $2500 Fujitsu 8.5kW split system.
The GoFundMe page had raised $735 for the unit by Friday, which will be installed for free by Luke McCluskey from McCluskey Heating & Cooling.
The community support doesn't stop there - Burson Auto Parts has donated all the workbenches and toolkit, DECA Wodonga TAFE have provided the location, and Foott Waste, Grinters Mechanical and Programmed have also provided support.
It is all in an effort provide another pathway for young people in the region - one that is inaccessible for many.
“Many of our high schools don't have an automotive department,” Ms Robinson said.
“Given the skills shortages that exist within transport logistics, it is quite staggering we don’t have this pathway.”
Burson Auto Parts store manager Jared Welch said he hoped the program would inspire the region's youth to get into the automotive industry.
“It’s not as popular to kids these days, as most want to be electricians or builders,” Mr Welch said.
But the program is also for young people to build connections and get back on track.
“It's a reengagement program for kids at risk of falling out of school,” Ms Robinson said.
“Mentors really open up young people's networks, and they can provide that beautiful, organic pathway to work.
“It's as much about connecting with mentors as it is about small engines.”
