The fundraiser was launched last week and Tatura Lions Club has set the bar high, making a generous first donation of $10 000 which puts the library's fundraising committee one step closer to its target of $100 000.
“It’s a good start and we’re now hoping the other service clubs and businesses come on board,” Tatura Library Community Fundraising committee chairman Carl Walters said.
Local contributions will ensure the library is fitted out with modern furniture and other cutting-edge features.
And while Mr Walters said the committee was discussing potential fundraising events, he didn’t want to put pressure on community members.
“I’m really conscious that rural communities are struggling at the moment,” he said.
“So, of course, we’ll try to access federal and state funding as well. We’re also looking to talk to key businesses to see if they’re interested.
“Significant contributors will have key locations in the new facility named after them, like the kids’ area and meeting room.”
The $2 million library upgrade has already kicked off, with Greater Shepparton City Council committing funds to the project and the Victorian Government pledging $600 000.
“It’s about supporting the community’s new library. We want it to be the best facility possible to attract people of all ages,” Mr Walters said.
“Libraries are much more than what they used to be. They used to be places where you could just get books – whereas now they are an open space, a meeting area for the community.”
