Close to 3000 spectators filled Shepparton Sports Precinct and cheered on the world’s best BMX riders as they kicked off their Olympic qualifying campaigns.
City of Greater Shepparton Mayor Seema Abdullah said the event’s success was a testament to Greater Shepparton’s state-of-the-art facilities reinforcing the tourism industry.
“The UCI BMX Supercross World Cup was an exciting opportunity to showcase all Greater Shepparton has to offer, including our world class BMX track as well as our accommodation, restaurants, eating establishments and locally-owned businesses,” Cr Abdullah said.
The track was dominated by Australian riders Anthony Dean, Izaac Kennedy and Saya Sakakibara, who placed in Saturday’s round one.
Also, the United States’ Alise Willoughby, who is the wife of Australian BMX icon Sam Willoughby, impressed and came first on both days.
It is estimated more than half the spectators travelled from outside the region, interstate and internationally for the world class event.
In addition to the BMX Supercross World Cup, Shepparton hosted a BMX Australia National Series round on Friday night, with more than 350 riders and their support crew getting a taste of the BMX action.
A Bike and Bites festival was also held at Victoria Park Lake on Saturday night to celebrate the weekend's feast of cycling.
