Mini Field of Women event to be held at Shepparton Running Festival

By Tara Whitsed

A Mini Field of Women will be created in Shepparton, coinciding with Shepparton Running Festival’s 5km Pink Ribbon Run.

The event is usually held locally in October each year but organiser and Goulburn Valley Health breast care nurse Melissa Gilmour said it was decided to give the broader community the opportunity to come along.

“It’s usually held on a weekday,” she said and explained this made it difficult for some people to attend the event.

Now being held on a Sunday, it is hoped more people who have been touched by breast cancer will attend the event.

“The idea is to celebrate women who have survived breast cancer and the ones fighting cancer and also to remember those women who have lost their lives to breast cancer,” Ms Gilmour said.

Ms Gilmour said those in attendance would be invited to place a pink cut-out lady in the ground with a special message around its neck.

She said the initiative was similar to the huge Breast Cancer Network Australia event held at the Melbourne Cricket Ground every year in which people gathered to make the shape of the pink lady, but the Shepparton event would see the cut-outs used to form the shape.

She said the event was also a good chance to highlight the fantastic facilities and staff at GV Health’s oncology department – the Peter Copulos Cancer and Wellness Centre.

Ms Gilmour said they were fortunate to have two breast care nurses working at the centre.

“Our role is to help women all the way along their cancer journey,” she said.

“We facilitate appointments, support patients, provide referrals and information.”

Ms Gilmour said breast cancer patients often had a number of different specialists to see and the breast care nurses ensured there was just one point of contact for patients.

“I think we’ve got a great team,” she said.

The Mini Field of Women event will be held on Sunday, August 25 at Victoria Park Lake, Shepparton, from 8am to 11am. For more information phone Melissa Gilmour on 5832 3777. For information about Shepparton Running Festival visit sheppartonrunningfestival.com.au
