Funding for upgrades of the Women’s Australian Air Force Auxiliary Force (WAAAF) Creek Walk was provided through round one of the Create NSW Arts and Cultural Funding Program.
Art installations will preserve and tell the cultural legacy of the WAAAF women's experience.
The walk also honours the memory of the 4,581 Royal Australian Air Force servicemen and 422 WAAAF service-women stationed in Tocumwal during the 1940s.
The track links the town centre, foreshore, splash park, Town Beach, Tocumwal Golf Course, Tocumwal Primary School, Sacred Heart School, Preschool, Kelly St Reserve and five hotels/motels.
As well as paying tribute to the town's history, South West Arts regional arts executive director Kerry-Anne Jones said the funding will significantly contribute to the tourism value of the community.
“We're absolutely thrilled with the funding, it will mean a boost for a project which really ties in to the tourism strategies of the region and for Tocumwal,” Ms Jones said.
“It's a deserving project that not only features a picturesque walk of the surrounding area, but also offers tribute to the women who served our country and how important their contribution to the development of the town.
“There will be multiple interpretative art pieces along the track and the bridge, it will make the walk really interesting for travellers.”
Ms Jones said the upgrades have been on the wish list for some time,.
She said the funding will enable works to be brought forward, and hopefully completed by the end of next year.
“There is still a bit of preliminary work to be done,” she said.
“The Tocumwal Rotary Club and Berrigan Shire Council will likely have one last meeting towards the end of January or start of February before they get cracking on the project.
“It will be done in 2020 which is fantastic for Tocumwal's tourism and community.”
