The scheme gives students from regional areas further opportunities to attend the university, offering guaranteed entry in one of the six participating bachelor’s degrees with a lowered ATAR score.
The Access Melbourne scheme has a range of general eligibilities and is open to eight specific categories to assist more students to join the university’s diverse student community.
A university spokesperson said the program allowed for fairer consideration of the students’ personal circumstances during the selection process.
“Access Melbourne supports undergraduate domestic students across a range of categories, including residents of a rural or isolated area, disadvantaged financial background and recognition as an Indigenous Australian,” the spokesperson said.
“Some categories, including the resident of a rural or isolated area category, have guaranteed entry levels, subject to Year 12 applicants meeting course prerequisites and achieving a specified ATAR result. This provides eligible students with reassurance after receiving their Year 12 results in December.”
Students can rest assured that if they meet the eligibility criteria as either a resident of a rural or isolated area or as a person with a disadvantaged financial background, they will be guaranteed entry in one of the five participating undergraduate bachelor degrees (arts, biomedicine, commerce, design or science) if they meet the accepted ATAR.
To apply for the rural or isolated area category, students must submit a Special Entry Access Scheme application via the Victorian Tertiary Admissions Centre under SEAS Category 1: Personal information and location.
The Access Melbourne scheme takes into account any external factors that may impact students’ results, meaning ATAR requirements for eligible Access Melbourne applicants are lower than the university’s standard published ATARs.
“The number of Access Melbourne students, including guaranteed entry students, varies from year to year,” the spokesperson said.
“In 2021, 33 per cent of our VTAC January round offers for domestic undergraduate students were made to applicants who were eligible for Access Melbourne.”
In 2022, the University of Melbourne has expanded the Access Melbourne criteria further, to welcome more students from a diverse background than ever before.
“We expanded our selection criteria in addition to the ATAR, to include applicants achieving a VCE score at least 35 in one or more VCE subjects and submitting a personal statement outlining their motivation and career ambitions,” the spokesperson said.
