Running for nearly 30 years, the awards promote storytelling of Australian culture.
Applications for 2021 are open with categories for junior and youth age groups.
The junior category is for writers aged 12 and under, while the youth category is for ages 13 to 17 years. Both include a short story and poetry section.
Each junior and youth category will have a first place prize of $300, followed by second prize of $100 and third $50.
City of Greater Shepparton Mayor Kim O’Keeffe said the awards recognised talented young writers across the Goulburn Valley.
“The Furphy Literary Awards gives an incredible opportunity for the youth of the region to express their voices through literature and gain experience in writing short stories and poetry. We look forward to seeing many great collections of work from our community,” she said.
She encouraged students and young writers to submit an entry and share their unique story.
“After all, everyone can write at least one good story.”
Entries can be made for the open category, which is a short story based on this year's theme ‘Australian Life in all its diversity'. Stories can be a maximum of 5000 words, and there is a $15,000 first prize.
The Furphy Literary Awards are presented by Greater Shepparton City Council, Furphy Foundation, Latrobe University and GV Library Group.
Entries for the open category close on April 30. Entries for other categories close on May 31, 2021 at 11.59 pm.
