In the penultimate round of the Northern Country Women’s League, Benalla Saints couldn’t match it with one of the league’s most experienced teams, with Shepparton whipping the young side by 105 points at Deakin Reserve on Sunday.
Saints skipper Kylie Relf again led from the front to be named best-on-ground for the visitors, while Cheree Tregoning put in another strong performance after starring last round.
But it wasn’t enough to stop Shepparton’s systematic approach to the contest, as the home side extended its 45-point half-time lead to a three-digit margin by the final siren.
Shepparton’s Ashlee Thorneycroft, who earlier this month took out the best-on-ground award in the NCWL interleague match against Central Victoria, was again at her best for Shepparton, heaping on six majors for the home side.
The Saints will line up for their final match of the home and away season at Benalla Showgrounds on Sunday, and with finals now off the cards, they will have nothing to lose as they face the competition gold standard team, Echuca, which in round four demolished the Saints by 90 points.
Final score: Benalla 0.0 (0) def by Shepparton 16.9 (105)
Best: K. Relf, C. Tregoning, P. Wilson, B. Button, G. York, S. Bullen
