This follows a number of sightings of unsecured loads across the council area when visiting waste facilities.
Council’s general manager Des Bilske said all trailer and vehicle loads must be properly secured.
“It is important that you transport your waste to your local waste facility responsibly,’’ he said.
“Not only is it illegal to transport unrestrained loads on public roads, covering your load also prevents dust, soil and litter escaping and polluting our environment.’’
As per NSW regulation, the following requirements apply when securing your load of waste:
■ Waste that is transported by a motor vehicle or trailer must be transported in a manner that avoids the waste spilling, leaking or otherwise escaping
■ Waste must be covered during transportation unless the waste consists solely of waste tyres or scrap metal.
■ The motor vehicle or trailer used to transport the waste must be constructed and maintained so as to avoid the waste spilling, leaking or otherwise escaping from the motor vehicle or trailer.
When transporting anything on the back of utes, trucks or trailers, council suggests residents tie down their load with sturdy ropes or use webbing, tarpaulin or straps to restrain the items.
“Anything loose in an open tray, truck or trailer poses a major safety risk to other road users, as unsecured items fall off causing hazards and general roadside litter,’’ Mr Bilske said.
“To prevent this residents should check loads are secure before driving.’’
