North downed McEwen Reserve 5-40 to 4-33 on Saturday in what was a fitting grand final victory for the side.
The champion did not lose a match all season and the well-deserved win was the icing on top of the cake after a successful campaign.
Evan Cooknell, who was part of the winning Shepparton North side, said it was good to take out the grand final.
“We were all pretty stoked to get the win, after an undefeated season it’s good to finish on a high with the grand final,” Cooknell said.
“We were confident we could win.”
It was certainly not an easy victory for the all-conquering North side, with Reserve winning four out of the first six games, however, once the mixed doubles began North lifted.
North was dominant in the mixed doubles, with Clark Pettigrew and Georgie Moore winning 6-2, Dean Pritchett and Helen Jackson winning 6-1 and Cooknell and Wendy Sidebottom picking up a 6-1 victory.
Cooknell identified Pettigrew and Moore’s big 6-2 win as the game that gave the rest of the side the energy to get over the line.
“It means a lot to the club, we’ve made the grand final the last four years and have won two,” he said.
“It’s only a little club, so it’s good to get a win.
“It means a lot to everyone.”
Cooknell said Shepparton North was like a family and made note of players that were unable to play on the day.
Mark Jackson was injured, so was unable to take part in the contest, while Lauren Good, who filled in a number of times throughout the season, was one of a number of fill-ins that helped the side.
“Everyone that filled in was part of the win,” Cooknell said.
It was certainly a big season of pennant tennis and, after not losing a match all year, Shepparton North was a deserved grand final winner.
