Potter has been wanted since 2010 on conspiracy to murder and Commonwealth drug charges.
In 2013, a team of police descended on Jimmy’s Island, on the Murray River near Cobram, after a top-off that he could be living there.
A makeshift campsite was found, but any link to the convicted killer was eventually ruled out.
Another possible sighting turned out to be a case of mistaken identity.
Potter had evaded capture for more than a decade by changing names and his appearance, and moving interstate multiple times.
He served 15 years for the dismemberment murder of a 19-year-old NSW girl and was wanted on federal charges over a $440 million ecstasy and cocaine haul.
It is alleged Potter failed to appear at Melbourne Magistrates’ Court in February 2010 on charges of conspiracy to murder.
Victoria Police travelled to Queensland on Tuesday to seek Potter’s extradition.
