Mooroopna duo Geoff Wood and Lloyd Payne piled on an incredible club record of 259 runs for the opening partnership during their D-grade side’s victory over Shepparton United.
Both batters raised their respective willows for triple-figure knocks, with Wood finishing unbeaten on 112 runs from 114 deliveries and Payne on 103 from 121, in what were masterclass displays.
The pair was celebrated for its stunning performance during Mooroopna’s 155-run win over United in the SJ Perry Shield clash.
The Mooroopna stalwarts piled on 27 boundaries between them and sent three over the fence at McGregor Oval.
However, passing the magical figure is nothing unusual for the pair.
Payne chalked up the seventh century of his career at the club — and now sits equal second on the all-time list along with Greg Luscombe and Gary Ford — while Wood now has three to his name.
Wood and Payne smashed their previous best partnership of 124, which was pencilled in earlier this season.
Ironically, Payne was involved in the previous club record set a decade ago.
That day during the 2011-12 season, Payne partnered up with Brad Lenon to register 234 runs for the opening wicket in a D-grade contest against Toolamba.
Tasked with chasing down Mooroopna’s score of 1-275, United could only muster 120 in reply.
The win keeps Mooroopna locked in top spot on the ladder.
Meanwhile, Old Students survived in a tight contest against Katandra.
Defending 7-220, Students secured a nervous 12-run victory.
Brad Willaton and Nate Earl passed the half-century mark for Old Students during their side’s mammoth first-innings total.
Willaton crafted 61 runs off 56 deliveries, while Earl reached 54 earlier in the innings.
Katandra’s Aaron Heffernan stood tall with 4-21.
Teammate Ross Hopkins was on fire at the top of the order during the run chase and belted 82 from 81 balls.
His whirlwind knock consisted of 13 boundaries.
But it was not enough as Katandra posted 8-208 from its 40 overs.
Elsewhere, Karramomus saluted by seven wickets over Central Park-St Brendan’s.
The Bloods chased down the target of 152 with three wickets down thanks to Rob Chaston (38 runs).
Tace Bigmore (3-15) and Shaidul Chowdhury (3-16) were the stars of the show with ball in hand for Karra.
Pine Lodge skipped away to a seven-wicket win over Northerners.
Ryan Sutherland was at his best with a classy unbeaten 42 that consisted of seven boundaries.
The Lodgers reached the target of 3-130 inside 33 overs.
Earlier in the match, Manjit Singh (4-21) was unplayable for the Lodgers and was their standout performer.
